So, what about those newts, then? The book starts with the corpulent, swearing, red-in-the-face Dutch captain Van Toch, who finds a species of intelligent salamanders on an island in Indonesia. Nevertheless, it inspired a number of adaptations, mainly stage plays, and influenced future writers who were lucky enough to find a copy. For years it was out of print and hard to get hold of. The book is not well known in Western Europe and the English-speaking world. The Nazis blacklisted it, naturally, and later on Czechia disappeared behind the Iron Curtain. War with the Newts, full of commentary on fascism, colonialism, capitalism and nationalism – all the isms –, slipped away from the public eye after those events, and it may have something to do with its contents. A few years after this book was published, the Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia and Capek was branded a public enemy, but he had already passed away by then from pneumonia. Published in 1936, War with the Newts is one of the last novels by Czech author Karel Capek, and is a thinly-veiled satire on, well, on a whole lot of things, but mainly on fascism. Newts, you say? What could that possibly mean?

His clear, engaging tone and accessible writing style allows even a musically inexperienced reader to follow him as he traces Wilson's musical evolution, with a particular focus on the years leading up to the writing and recording of Pet Sounds and SMiLE, albums which many consider to be the masterpieces of his oeuvre. It aims not just to identify great songs, but to explain exactly what makes them so." Lambert, a renowned musicologist, brings to this work to life with both his professional expertise and an infectious personal appreciation of the power of pop music. It acknowledges the familiar biographical contexts of his songs, but it tells completely new stories about the birth and evolution of his musical ideas, identifying important musical trends in his work, heretofore undisclosed inter-song connections within his music, or between his music and that of others, and the nature and extent of his artistry. Inside the Music of Brian Wilson is, as author Phillip Lambert writes in the prologue "completely, and intensely, focused on the music of Brian Wilson, on the musical essence of his songs and the aesthetic value of his artistic achievements. Penny is sick and tired of always taking a backseat to her mother’s (crazy) dreams. If you haven't seen it and you'd like to see a charming, self-effacing and slightly eccentric photographer spend 90mins answering questions on the what, why and how of his career, it is fantastic, IMO. After much sodding around, I've just tried it in my Apple Mac CD/DVD player and, although I needed to change the zone, that was a doddle. Once home, I put it into my player only to find that my player didn't recognise the zone, even though it was supposedly able to be played in the UK. I'd recently seen the retrospective on his work, so I bought the DVD. It's split into 13 "chapters" and Saul provides his insight and opinions into the various topics. I'm not a fan of much of the modern art contained in there but there are a few interesting things, the turbine hall (currently undergoing some work and inaccessible) is a great space and the gallery does have a half-decent photography section in its bookshop.Īnyway, I was thumbing through the books when I stumbled across a DVD of "In No Great Hurry" a documentary about Saul Leiter, filmed whilst he was still alive. During a recent amble along London's South Bank, I popped into Tate Modern. Aren’t these the very topics for which religion even exists? What’s going on here? Suddenly the fact that these “Mormon books” have no explicitly Mormon content is not only odd but genuinely remarkable. Then add in that they are both filled with information about spirits and postmortal realms. So the fact that these books were published by whom they were published by, and that we’re discussing these books as “Mormon books,” is a pretty fascinating pair of facts up front. Which is great, I think we’ll all agree, especially when both books are doing very curious things for “Mormon books.”Ī Short Stay is published by Strange Violin and Dispirited by Zarahemla-both publishers with a Mormon bent-even though A Short Stay begins with the Mormon hero learning that Zoroastrianism was the true religion and Dispirited never uses the M-word at all. Perkins both seem to have been more widely discussed online in their first few months than most Mormon books get in their first couple years, and both books have been loved by those readers. Two Mormon books this year seem to be getting absolute purity of praise. Tracking delivery Saver Delivery: Australia postĪustralia Post deliveries can be tracked on route with eParcel. Before then, Mia was implementing changes and reforming the system so that the lives of the general populace were improved and so that there was less corruption and unfairness that might lead to the average people feeling slighted-it was a bottom-up approach. I am slightly disappointed in the shift of focus after that point. Though it's actually not referred to all that often, especially after Mia starts attending the academy. The shifting bloody diary is an excellent narrative device that can propel the plot forward and maintain a clear structure to all of the improvements they implement and connections they build. Thoroughly enjoyable. There's always the possibility, of course, that it could grow more dull over time, but for now all I can say is that it was a pleasant read and that I am almost desperately looking forward to further installments. |
